Weekly Update for February 7-11, 2011

Hello and good day to everyone!

I hope everyone is staying healthy and warm through this snowy winter. This week we have a few happenings that are new, so please make sure you check out the upcoming events at the bottom of this post.

Recently in my classroom we have started watching CNN Student News. Each day we watch the news from CNN's website, www.cnn.com/studentnews . The students are enjoying the news casts as well as the great discussions that come after. Feel free to have discussions at home about the things we learn about on the news cast or in class. It amazes me to hear the thoughts of our fourth graders and to see how really aware they are with what is going on in the world.

In math we are currently working on fractions, uses of fractions, and probability. If you cook a lot at your house, please encourage your fourth grader to help you measure and use measuring cups and spoons to further their knowledge of fractions. In fact one of our homework assignments this week is to locate and write down a recipe that has fractions. If your 4th grader is unable to help you cook another way to incorporate the use of fractions at home is to have the kids help divide up food, snacks, or anything that you need equal amounts of for the people in your household. Any real life experience makes the learning much more meaningful.

In science this week we are finishing up our unit. To finish our unit the students get to come up with a mixture of powders. Next another group of students has to figure out the combination of powders the students put in the mystery mixture based on the physical and chemical properties. You can ask you child what they have learned about alum, salt, baking soda, cornstarch, and talc.

In social studies this week we are going to take an imaginary train tour of the Northeast United States. We are going to be learning about the Northeast Coast, the mountains of the Northeast, Plymouth, Massachusetts, Boston Massachusetts, the Erie Canal, and New York City.
